I Am A Jewish Woman,
I Speak to God through Prayer
By Carol J. Wechsler Blatter
Hear me God
as you heard
my fore-mothers
Sarah, Rebecca, Rachael.
Sarah who prayed & wept,
God heard her pleas &
cries.
God said she would conceive
and she had a healthy son,
Isaac
who had children.
Our generations (dor v dor)
continued.
Rebecca prayed & wept,
God heard her pleas &
cries.
God said she would conceive
and she had twin healthy
sons,
Esau & Jacob
who had children.
Our generations (dor v dor)
continued.
Rachael prayed & wept,
God heard her pleas &
cries.
God said she would conceive
And she had two healthy sons,
Joseph, later Benjamin
who had children.
Our generations (dor v dor)
continued.
Praying passionately
I plead to God
like my fore-mothers.
Sarah, Rebecca,
& Rachael,
grandmothers they later
became.
Dear God
Bless me as you did them,
find me worthy to have
a grandchild.
I implore the one God
of Israel-
LISTEN! (Sh ma),
HEAR my prayer
BLESS me with
a grandchild sometime
in my lifetime.
In my older age now
I can play-playfully,
unself-consciously
laughing, singing
dancing around
together.
Hugging, tugging
at my waist
my grandchild.
Let me know the joy
of a grandchild's firsts,
so many firsts-
rolling over,
sitting up,
crawling,
walking,
babbling,
ma-ma, da-da,
pop-pop,
sentences-
short.
first school day,
first reader,
first printed words,
first cursive
first friend.
first poem-
first kiss,
first love,
a life of newest firsts.
A grandchild.
God, I speak to you in
prayerful language
pleading, pleasing,
passionate words
from my soul.
Bless me with a
grandchild,
please.
