Sacredness - a Poem for Yom Kippur

There is a sacredness within us
all around
Placed here by the hand of G-d
This blood flows through all of life
coming to rest in who we are
As sacrifices were made
this enriched liquid was spread on the altar
The smoke from burning animals rising in holiness
And the Children of Israel paused to acknowledge the Creator
Today as breezes blow and waves dance upon the ocean sand
We sacrifice something far more sacred
With rising prayer and beating heart
we seek the burning smell of our direction
Standing before the Eternal Flame
Its warmth lapping at the edges of our souls
We open our spiritual hearts
Beating
Beating
In time with the most sacred song
Lyrics of lamentation mix with notes of praise
Together creating a song of the heart
Our own blood flowing toward a giving G-d
Rivers of calm and awe encircle our lives with the birthmark of who we are
As offspring of the sacred
Sacrificing ourselves
Freely offering all we have
in love of our sacred family
