I Believe
The thirteen points of belief as compiled by the
Rambam, Rabbi Moses Maimonides (1135-1204) wrote a compendium of Jewish belief. These points
are considered to be the fundamental beliefs of a Jew and are included in many prayer
books.
I believe with complete faith that
the Creator, blessed be His name, He is the Creator and directs all of the creation. He
alone, did, does and will do all that is to be done.
I believe with complete faith that
the Creator, blessed be His name, He is One, and there is no other oneness like His
in any manner what so ever. He, alone, is the G-d who was, is, and will be.
I believe with complete faith that
the Creator, blessed be His name, is not composed of a body, nor do bodily
incidences occur to Him, nor does He possess any form which can be imagined.
I believe with complete faith that
the Creator, blessed be His name, He is the beginning and He is the last.
I believe with complete faith that
the Creator, blessed be His name, to Him alone is it proper to direct our prayers, and it
is not proper to direct prayers to any other than Him.
I believe with complete faith that
the words of the prophets are true.
I believe with complete faith that
the prophecy of Moses, our teacher, may he rest in peace, was true; and that he was the
father of all prophets, whether they preceeded him or followed him.
I believe with complete faith that
the Torah which we possess today was the one that was given to Moses, may he rest in
peace.
I believe with complete faith that
the this Torah will never be changed, nor will there be another Torah from the Creator,
blessed be His name.
I believe with complete faith that
the Creator, blessed be His name, knows all of the doings of man and their thoughts, as it
is written, He who fashions together their hearts, He understands their deeds
(Psalms 33:15)
I believe with complete faith that
the Creator, blessed be His name, that he rewards those who keep his commands and punishes
those who transgress his commands.
I believe with complete faith
in the coming of the Messiah, and though he tarry, I wait each day for his arrival.
I believe with complete faith that
there will be a revival of the dead at a time according to the desires of the Creator,
blessed be His name, and that his memory shall endure for all eternity.
